Over the past year in the UK, strength and functional training has surged from niche to mainstream — increasingly seen not just as a “companion” to cardio, but as a core pillar of fitness for all ages and ability levels.

  • Independently, UK fitness commentary and trend forecasts show that “strength training” and “bodyweight training” are among the fastest-growing Google search terms in the UK. 
  • There’s also demographic change: more women, older adults, and Gen Z consumers are embracing resistance and functional training formats, partly as they see strength as tied to longevity, mobility, injury prevention, and confidence.

  • Rather than simply lifting heavy weights, functional training emphasizes multiple planes of movement, core stability, free weights, kettlebells, sandbags, sleds, and bodyweight — exercises that mimic real-life activities.
